German
German is one of English's closest cousins. You might not understand "Mein Vater hat einen Hund" yet, but after you've studied German for a while, you'll start to see the similarities (mein and my, Vater and father, hat and has, einen and a/an, Hund and hound), and you'll know that my father has a dog. Many of the most common words in English are very similar to (or even identical to) their German equivalents.
Apart from English, German is just about the most useful language for travel in Europe. There are over 80 million German speakers in Germany itself, but there are millions more in Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg. And there are millions of other people who speak German as a first or second language in other European countries.
